 Summer is drawing to a close and September marks the start of the Town’s 2013 Budget process.  This will be a pivotal budget as KPMG will be providing Council with a host of cost saving options on October 1st !

Following two successful years of pressing Council to hold the line on budget increases, Midlandcommunity.ca will continue to actively work to see needed cost savings incorporated in the 2013 Budget.

For those of you who have been enjoying summer pursuits and have missed some of the goings on at Town Hall, and for those who just want to meet other members and make some new friends, we invite you to our 4th Meet & Greet:

Where:            Boathouse Eatery

When:        Tuesday, October 2nd

Time:             5 to 7 PM.

Hors d’ oeuvres, compliments of the Boathouse Eatery, will be served and an update presented of activities past and planned as well as our first impression of KPMG’s final report to Council .

Don’t forget that  there is a  Ward 2 meeting 7-9 at Council Chambers right after this Meet & Greet.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank those who have provided financial support for Midlandcommunity’s efforts over the past 2 years!  While members volunteer their time, we have ongoing expenses and so ask you to consider supporting our activities with an annual donation of $25.00 or more.

We look forward to seeing you.

About Us

September marks the 2nd anniversary of Midlandcommunity.ca and the beginning of our 3rd year pursuing:

  • a tax and policy friendly community;
  • accountable and competitive delivery of municipal services;
  • timely and relevant communication through our website http://midlandcommunity.ca

Our first year saw the election of a new Council and a concerted effort on our part to see taxes held to a zero increase.  The new Council managed a 2% tax increase and began to reverse the trend of the previous decade that saw average local taxes increase at four times the rate of inflation

In our second year, we made a comprehensive deputation to Council with ten years of financial data that showed Midland with:

•       population increasing at less than 0.5% per year

•       taxes charged to the average household increasing 82%

•       payroll spending per household increasing 93%

•       parks and recreation spending per person increasing 215%

•       spending for fire increasing 97%

•       inflation for the period at only 20%

The tax increase in our second year was held to less than 0.6% and Council commissioned KPMG to conduct a Management Study to identify ways the Town could realize additional cost savings. Midlandcommunity.ca recently made a second deputation to KPMG and Council as part of that study. KPMG preliminary results generally confirm Midlandcommunity.ca findings and show where annual savings in excess of $1Million can be found without reducing needed services.

We now enter our third year committed to pursuing every appropriate cost saving opportunity in upcoming Town budgets.

In addition to supporting our efforts financially, you can help by encouraging your friends and neighbours to add their names to our contact list by emailing talktous@midlandcommunity.ca
