Positing Running For: Deputy Mayor

I am running for Midland Town Council because…

I would like to continue to be actively involved in the progress of this great Town of Midland.

My vision for Midland is…

A strong economic base fueled by fair taxes and fiscal responsibility.  An increase in good paying job opportunities that will contribute towards a secure and prosperous future for my family and yours.

I will accomplish this vision by focusing on the following three things…

I. Be fiscally responsible; I will continue the fight to keep taxes lower than the rate of inflation and essential services in place.

II. Enhance and support all Economic Development. Working with our three neighbours (Penetanguishene, Tiny and Tay Townships), there may be many shared services that we could all enjoy. As a result, potential savings could contribute to keeping our tax rate lower, which in turn will attract more businesses with job opportunities for our residents.

III. Encourage more community involvement in the issues affecting Midland and continue to promote Council transparency.

Describe your top three accomplishments that make you a good candidate for Council. For current or previous members of council, please focus on your top three in that role.

I. Since being elected to Midland Town council, for the 2011 to 2014 term, taxes for the people of Midland have risen by 7% while maintaining essential services. This is a very positive step for residents who had seen taxes increase 107% during the 8 years previous to 2011. I have fought hard to keep the taxes low and will continue.

II. I have proven that I am not afraid to ask the tough questions by bringing the motion to Council on OPP costing. The KPMG study conducted for the Town suggests that the Town of Midland could save $700,000 or more a year by switching to the OPP for our policing. With that kind of potential savings, I believe it is worth looking into.

III. Most importantly, my proven integrity, honesty, dedication, approachability and transparency that I bring to my current Councillor Ward 2 role. This will continue if I am elected Deputy Mayor.

  1. thanks for participating

  2. I keep reading about the ‘potential’ to save $750 000 from the KPMG report, however what people aren’t talking about is the note attached to the report. “Preliminary estimate based on 2012 budgeted expenditures, discussions with management and other assumptions. Subject to revision as part of the 2013 budget process. Does not included implementation or other one-time costs.” Some of the scariest words in this are “preliminary”, “assumption” and “subject to revision”. My suggestion, get input from other municipalities who have made this change and see what their experiences have been. Do you think cost should be the only consideration?
