Positing Running For: Ward 2 Councillor

I am running for Midland Town Council because…

I believe that governments must control their growth. The growth of programs and services should never outpace the ability of the economy to support them; they must be cost effective and sustainable. After all it’s not governments’ money – it comes from the people.

I believe that we need a Council that understands the true meaning of fiscal responsibility. One that will work hard to find the best and most effective methods of delivering the services we expect and need from our local government.

My vision for Midland is…

I see my Town as a vital place that is alive with purpose, hope and prosperity.

I will accomplish this vision by focusing on the following three things…

*Fiscal Responsibility*, controlling the cost growth by ensuring the services provided by the Town are delivered in a cost effective and efficient manner.

*Economic Development*: investing in our future. By supporting an effective economic development effort that focuses on bringing new jobs to our community through tourism, new investment, business retention and support for local start-up ventures.

*Policy*. We have observed how past councils abdicated their responsibility for creating policy to staff. In order for policy to be meaningful and relevant it must driven by the people though their council. A council which simply defers to staff in areas of policy fails in its duty to the people.

Describe your top three accomplishments that make you a good candidate for Council. For current or previous members of council, please focus on your top three in that role.

In 2010 I proposed the -2, 0, +2 budget scenario requirement. Under this arrangement staff were required to put forward multiple budget proposals, forcing departments to re-evaluate their priorities and service delivery methods. It produced a verifiable and quantifiable series of suggestions that allowed council to weigh and judge the effects of various cost control proposals.

I strongly supported the KPMG study and the OPP costing initiative. Each designed to test the current service delivery model.

I supported the creation of the new Economic Development Corporation . An investment in our future.
