  1. Has a comparison been made to taxes / assessment or /population? As an example of where the relationship to annual income may not be helpful, Bracebridge is a community that includes high-value summer homes with taxes paid by other than local residents.

In October we made a deputation to Midland Council that included the results of extensive research we conducted. We calculated the actual dollar cost of local (lower tier) taxes for the average assessed household in each of the 14 municipalities we looked at. Midland’s charges per household were second highest at $1,677 with only Bradford-West Gwillimbury higher at $1,852. According to the last census, Midland’s average household income was $45,000 while Bradford’s was $80,000. Additionally, we looked at taxes on new development specifically on a new $300,000- assessed home. The conclusion, using this model, is that Midland has the highest taxes in all of Simcoe County. From 2000-2009 (the period we surveyed), the taxes Midland charges the average household for Midland’s services are up 82%, inflation is up 20% and we experienced a mere 5% growth in population over this ten year period.

Our full study is posted on our website and contains several charts analyzing Midland’s taxes and spending from different perspectives. Please see charts at page 1 and pages 15-23.
