downtown-master-plan-logoBy all accounts the Downtown Master Plan Workshop held last Thursday evening at the Sports and Recreation Centre was well attended as such things go. Over 55 residents turned out on a blustery winters night to make their ideas known for the future of Midland’s Downtown.

The Downtown Master Plan, the Town’s first, is intended to be both a visioning exercise that will require extensive public consultation with a wide range of community stakeholders and a detailed implementation plan to lead the revitalization of the Town’s downtown. The study undertakes an examination of the history of downtown, the role it has played in the past and the identification of opportunities and constraints to its future revitalization. The Study examines the full range of issues in respect of the future of downtown including what uses should be permitted or not permitted in the downtown, what is an appropriate scale and what form should development or redevelopment take, and how can the Town improve linkages to the Town Dock, shoulder areas and the Midland Bay Landing site. The Master Plan will deliver an urban design plan and framework for public and private development projects including urban design guiding principles, and streetscape and public realm improvements. The project is described at http://www.midland.ca where you will see an icon near the bottom of the page ‘Downtown Master Plan Study’.
