Positing Running For: Ward 1 Councillor

I am running for Midland Town Council because…

I want to continue to make Midland a more sustainable, equal and prosperous place for all. I want to be on the new leadership team that is changing how we do “local government” to be more participatory, accountable and respectful.

My vision for Midland is…

A place of abundant life – an inclusive, welcoming and caring community; sustainable, affordable and healthy quality of life; thriving independent-owned local businesses; great entrepreneurial and voluntary spirit; vibrant downtown; joyful community celebrations; locally produced food; natural beauty and waterfront; amazing culture; safely walk and bike; jobs and opportunities for our youth and seniors.

I will accomplish this vision by focusing on the following three things…

a) Continue taking on difficult issues facing small towns without being sentimental about the past – openness to strategic new ideas in a climate of economic uncertainty, loss of manufacturing jobs, downloading, changing demographics, climate change, income inequality, lack of affordable housing and increasing tax burdens.
b) Keeping an optimistic “can-do” spirit around economic development and tourism. Harnessing the power of independent-owned local business, culture and new IT businesses.
c) Continue pushing for new collaboration between departments, neighbouring communities and stakeholders to achieve cost-effective service delivery models.

Describe your top three accomplishments that make you a good candidate for Council. For current or previous members of council, please focus on your top three in that role.

a) Advocate for 8 years on Council for environmental policy and making links to economic development and quality of life. Supported investing in LDC street lights, trails, bike lanes, ecotourism, waterfront, and new energy plan to save 1% per year.
b) Advocate for more meaningful engagement with public and stakeholder and for more intelligent debate and creative problem solving. I ask hard questions.
c) I walk the talk – I shop local and downtown; attend cultural and community events; donate and volunteer; actively engage on Committees and Boards. My law practice focus is low income families – I care about social justice issues and support access to affordable recreation, housing.
